It has promise
First off, let me say that I rarely write reviews for anything. Usually a product/service has to be so good that I feel I should tell everyone about it or so terrible that I should warn people not to purchase it. This particular application is different. I feel it has a lot of potential to be an incredibly useful app and I wanted to give it a fair review (more than just saying do/don’t buy this app).
After I loaded this application on my Ipod and started it up my first impression was that it was very sleek. I had read other reviews and comments about this app stating that the older presentation was much better, but I would have to disagree. I never owned the previous character4ge, but I have seen pictures of it. I prefer a simpler, lest distracting presentation, but I suppose presentation is more a matter of opinion than anything else. As far as performance issues go I can’t say that I noticed anything that was terribly obvious. There was no perceived slowdown while running the program, however, I am running this app on a new ipod, and I can’t vouch for how this would run on an older model. Using the application was also pretty easy. I don’t think I ever really felt confused while trying to navigate from one section of the app to another. Adding items, feats, and powers was pretty much as easy as a typing a few key strokes and selecting what I wanted.
There are a few negative points I have to say about this app though. While I was creating a character on this app I took the numbers straight from my paper character sheet. Unfortunately, some of the numbers didn’t seem to add up. My rogue should have a +12 to attack rating (+5 dex, +3 dagger prof. +1 light blade expertise, +1 ½ level, +1 rogue weapon talent, and +1 magic enhance), but the app only shows me as having a +10 attack rating, even though I have my +1 dagger selected, leveled my character to beyond level 2, and selected the appropriate feat. It appears that something in the program isn’t registering in the app. Another really annoying problem I have with this app is trying to delete items. It actually took me 15-20 minutes to find that I had to press near the right side of the screen bring up the delete menu. When I did delete the item it worked great. However, when I brought up the delete icon and then tried to click away the entire application crashed. A simpler solution to the delete button would be allowing someone to set the quantity of items to 0 in the data window, but this doesn’t seem to work either.
The following is a list of things I feel would improve the program:
1) The ability to create custom items, powers, feats. I realize this is a lofty suggestion, but it would really help make this app a contender as a must have app for dnd 4e gamers. When I was adding in powers for my characters I noticed that some of them weren’t on the list. If I was able to add in my own content, such as the powers not listed, it would make the app very powerful. I can’t imagine this would conflict with the game license because if you own the books you would simply be adding the data for your own use.
2) Updating the hit points bar after damage is calculated. After I entered the damage to my character it didn’t update. I found that I had to switch to another tab and then back to the events tab for it to register my new hit point total. This issue isn’t a major one, and it wasn’t even enough for me to add in the negative comments section, but it would improve usability.
3) Being able to sort items into containers (e.g. being able to put a torch into a backpack or marbles into a beltpouch). This last suggestion is pretty minor, and I would have to say I could live without it, but it does make it easier for a player to know where all his/her items are.
With the proper updates and a little bit more TLC from the developers I think I could actually be persuaded to throw away my character sheets and exclusively use this application, but until then I will have to hang on to my character sheets.
(wow, nice review XunsponsoredX)
Nice app. I can see how people would prefer i4e over this (character import), but this app has a huge pro- built in powers feats etc.
Not as good as I was hoping
The only problem I have found with it is that it has a search bar for powers or feats etc. and it doesn't narrow it down for what the current character can use so it shows all powers there are when im looking for 1st lvl wizard powers
